Why is my Microsoft Word background black?

By default, the background of Microsoft Word is white, and it is commonly accepted by many users. However, you might have one day opened your Word document and were shocked that your Word now has a black background with white text, instead of the regular white background with black text.

What you'll learn today

Why is my Microsoft Word background black?

Why is my Microsoft Word black? Could it be a bug, or is it caused by any issue from Word’s side? Don’t worry, it is not a bug or an issue on Word, as there are three possible reasons for this occurrence.

  • The Dark Mode might have been enabled on Word.
  • You might be using a high-contrast theme.
  • Hardware graphics acceleration could be enabled.

This article will cover the 3 things you can try to solve the Microsoft Word changing to a black background with white text issue.

How to Fix if your Microsoft Word has a Black background?

Solution 1: You can disable Dark Mode on Word

To do so, you have to change Office Theme, because Microsoft Word supports dark mode as well as light mode. To be specific, you have the ability to change the background color of Word by changing the Office theme. If you do not wish to use dark mode, just disable it on Word.

To turn off dark mode on Word follow the:

Step 1: Open the Word document.

Step 2: Click on File from the top menu, then navigate to Account.

Step 3: Expand Office Theme, then click on White. You also have the ability to select another option, depending on your needs. The selection will be saved automatically.

Solution 2: Turn off High Contrast Themes on Windows 11

If you are using high-contrast themes on Windows 11 it can cause the Microsoft Word document to turn black. Don’t worry as you can turn it off to solve the issue, to do so, follow the:

Step 1: Press the Windows + I key to open the Settings app.

Step 2: Select Accessibility, then click on Contrast Themes.

Step 3: Click the box, this will extend the dropdown menu, then, click on None and click the Apply button to save the changes you made.

Solution 3: Turn off Hardware Graphics Acceleration in Microsoft Office

This is the last resort to solve your Word document, to turn the black background to the regular white background is to turn off Hardware Graphics Acceleration in Microsoft Office. Many users have reportedly solved this issue using the method, keep in mind that I have not tried this, as I quite enjoy the black ground, as it is not harsh on my eyes.
