How to manage and view saved Passwords on iPhone?

Is it good to save Passwords on iPhone? If you happen to be practicing good online security, you would be having a unique, strong password for every web site you visit. That means that you don’t repeat passwords and make them complex with a lengthy combination of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and numbers, along with special symbols.

What you'll learn today

How to manage and view saved Passwords on iPhone?

Let’s say you have reused the same password for multiple sites, and if one of them is hacked, the hacker can use the same password to access your other accounts as well.

Of course, remembering all of the different passwords is a daunting task, which is why Safari on your iPhone presents the offer to remember the passwords for you. Generally, Safari suggests you auto-fill the right password at the appropriate time and web site, however, you also have the ability to display as well as manage the complete set of remembered passwords as well.

How to find and edit passwords on iPhone?

1. First, we have to start by opening the Settings app.

2. Tap on “Passwords & Accounts.”

3. Tap on “Website & App Passwords.” You may be prompted to enter your passcode. Or, you might be prompted to log in with Touch ID or Face ID.

4. Your iPhone will then display the complete list of your saved passwords. If you wish to see the password details (the login username along with the password, as well as the URL of the website that the password is associated with) tap the entry for the password.

There are several options at your disposal:

  • If you no longer want to have a password saved and wish to delete it:
  • Then, swipe it to the left, then tap on “Delete.”
  • If you wish to edit a password:
  • Tap on it, then tap on “Edit” in the top right corner of the screen. Tap on “Done” to save the changes you made.
  • If you wish to go to the website and change your password:
  • You can tap on the password, then tap on “Change Password on Website.” Safari will then proceed to open the appropriate site where you will have the ability to update your password.

How to view saved passwords via Siri?

Summon Siri on your iPhone, this can be done by pressing the right-side button on iPhones with Face ID. For a few iPhones, this can also be done by pressing and holding the Home Button. Or, you can also use the hot word ‘Hey Siri.’

After Siri appears, say to Siri ‘Show all my passwords.’

You also have the ability to ask Siri for specific passwords. For specific passwords, you have to say something like, ‘Show my Gmail password,’ or ‘Show my Instagram password.’

Then you have to authenticate using Touch ID or Face ID. You will be inside Settings where you can view, copy, as well as AirDrop your passwords.

What is meant by AutoFill Passwords?

When Autofill Passwords is enabled, you will automatically see the username/email (the passwords are not shown, however, they are auto-filled) above the keyboard when you are on a website/app’s login field. These are super handy.

However, Apple does provide you the option to disable the AutoFill feature. If you want to do so:

  • Open the Settings, then tap on Safari.
  • Tap on AutoFill.
  • Turn off the switch for Use Contact Info, this will now prevent Safari from auto-filling your name, email, etc.
  • Turn off the switch for Credit Cards, after you do so, Safari will not autofill your payment information on web sites.

How to delete accounts/passwords from the iCloud Keychain?

  • First, open Settings → Passwords & Accounts.
  • Tap on Website & App Passwords, then authenticate using Touch ID or Face ID.
  • Tap on Edit, this can be found in the upper-right.
  • Tap on the desired entries, then tap on Delete and confirm.

How to manually add a password to the iCloud Keychain?

  • First, open the Settings app, then tap on Passwords & Accounts.
  • Tap on Website & App Passwords, then authenticate using Touch ID or Face ID.
  • Tap on the plus icon (+).
  • Enter the website, username as well as password. After you are finished entering the details, tap on Done.

How to edit saved passwords on iPhone?

  • First, you have to launch the Settings app, then tap on Passwords & Accounts.
  • Tap on Website & App Passwords, then authenticate using Touch ID or Face ID.
  • Tap on a saved entry, then tap on Edit.
  • Now you have the ability to tap on the username as well as the password field to make the changes you desire. From here, you will also be able to delete the selected entry from the Keychain. After you are done making changes, tap on Done.

What are Security Recommendations in iOS?

Using a strong as well as a unique password for every app as well as every website account is a daunting task, however, every weak password that is used and reused exposes you to security risks.

In iOS 13, if you happened to use the same password for more than one site or app, you would be able to spot a small triangle with an exclamation mark inside it. When you would tap on it, you would have been able to see which sites you used this same password on.

However, with iOS 15, Apple has provided you the ability to see which of your passwords are potentially vulnerable, be it because they are too simple. Or, if they have been used for more than one app or website.

You have the ability to check this by navigating to Settings > Passwords > Security Recommendations. Make sure you have turned the switch on for Detect Compromised Passwords. The screen will indicate any risky passwords which are a cause of worry, and those you should change.
