The so-called Friend emojis, are the emojis utilized by the photo-centric ephemeral messaging platform utilizes as an entertaining way to define your relationship with other Snapchat users. The Snapchat emojis are assigned based on how you and your friend interact on the platform. Depending on the frequency of Snaps as well as messages, you are assigned a friend category accompanied by an emoji to represent it.

Snapchat Emoji Meanings Explained

Snapchat has a variety of friend emojis, each of these emojis has its own hidden meaning. I detailed all the Snapchat emojis below:

Best Friends (Smile) 😊

Snapchat will display a smile emoji next to a person when they are one of your best friends. Note – keep in mind that this does not mean that both of you are the top best friend of each other. You will be able to see this emoji next to multiple Snapchat contacts as long as you are frequently sending them Snaps.

Besties (Yellow Heart) 💛

If you happen to be the top best friend of each other, you will spot the yellow heart icon to indicate that the person is your bestie.

BFF (Red Heart) ❤️

If you manage to be each other’s bestie (top friend) for two consecutive weeks you will receive a red heart next to their name in the chats list. As it is already evident, you will be going from besties (yellow heart) to BFF (red heart) for your consistency.

Super BFF (Two Pink Hearts) 💕

Outside Snapstreaks, Super BFF is the ultimate symbol of friendship on Snapchat. This is awarded when you have been each other’s top best friend for 2 months in a row. You will be able to spot two pink hearts when you unlock this friend emoji category.

Mutual BFs (Sunglasses Face) 😎

If one of your best friends also happens to be one of the other user’s best friends, you will be able to spot the sunglasses emoji, to show that you are mutual best friends. This emoji is fairly common among people with common interests or users who are attending the same school or the same college.

Mutual Besties (Grimace) 😬

If it so happens that your top best friend is also another user’s top best friend, you will be able to spot a grimacing emoji next to their name. This will often happen in tightly-knit friend circles, generally with three or four people groups.

Baby 👶

The Baby emoji shows up on Snapchat when you newly become a Snapchat friend of a user. Adding each other to the friend’s list is important in Snapchat, if not, the messages sent by you will remain in the pending status.

Birthday (Cake) 🎂

As the name and emoji suggest, this emoji will appear next to your friend’s name on their birthday. If you are someone who finds it hard to keep track of numerous birthdays, this feature is likely to be extremely handy for you.

Gold Star 🌟

A golden star will appear if someone other than you happened to replay your friend’s Snap in the past 24 hours. It might or might not be a good conversation starter, depending on the relationship dynamic.

Smirk 😏

Snapchat used to have this smirk emoji that was brutal, to be put simply. The smirk emoji showed up when you are one of their best friends, however, they are not one of yours. Snapchat has however removed the smirk emoji; the reason could have been the broken friendships and relationships the smirk must have caused.

Snapstreak (Fire) 🔥

A fire emoji will appear next to the contact’s name when a Snapstreak begins. A Snapstreak begins when you send and also receive Snaps from a user at least once for 3 consecutive days.

100 Snapstreak (100 Emoji) 💯

The users who are dedicated enough to maintain a Snapstreak for 100 consecutive days will be able to spot the 100 emoji instead of the fire icon on the 100th day. This emoji is undoubtedly a moment worth celebrating for the users.

Hourglass ⌛

The Hourglass emoji helps you identify the Snapstreaks that are about to end. An hourglass emoji will appear next to a user’s name when you have passed 20 hours without sending a Snap. In other words, you will have exactly 4 hours left before the Snapstreak will eventually expire. As the Snapchat Streak expires, the hourglass emoji will disappear, as well.

If you are someone who believes in the concept of astrology, you would probably be familiar with what the zodiac sign means in a user’s profile. For the rest of us, those who are not avid astrology enthusiasts, the zodiac sign is associated with a person’s birth month. For example, an account might have the zodiac sign Cancer, this means that the user must have entered a date between June 21 and July 22 while they were signing up for the account.

Given below is a quick guide to help you get acquainted with the zodiac emoji meanings on Snapchat:

♈ Aries: March 21 – April 19

♉ Taurus: April 20 – May 20

♊ Gemini: May 21 – June 20

♋ Cancer: June 21 – July 22

♌ Leo: July 23 – August 22

If you are not satisfied with the default set of emojis provided by Snapchat, you have the ability to choose to customize your friend’s emojis. While the predefined emoji categories will not change; you will get the option to use an emoji of your preference. If that is something you happen to be interested in, you navigate to Snapchat settings to change Snapchat emojis.
