Covid is a serious respiratory disease and can be challenging for pets. It’s important to know can dogs get Covid, so that you can take the appropriate steps to protect your pet and have them treated as soon as possible.

A few pets worldwide, including cats and dogs, have been reported to be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19, mostly after close contact with people with COVID-19. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses. Few variants cause cold-like illnesses in people, while other variants may cause illness in several types of animals, such as cattle, camels. Few variants infect only animals and do not infect humans.

Most pets tend to get infected after being in close contact with their owners with COVID-19. To protect pets from the virus-

Every eligible person in the household should be vaccinated.

  • People with COVID-19 should not be in contact with their pets.
  • Pet owners should not allow pets to be in contact with unvaccinated people outside, as much as possible.
  • Talk to your veterinarian if you have doubts about appropriate products that are to be used for bathing or cleaning, for further protection of your pet.

What to do if you are pet gets sick?

Depending on your pet’s symptoms, the veterinarian might suggest isolating your pet at home, rather than in the hospital. If your veterinarian does recommend home isolation, then follow his advice to protect yourself and others. Please, keep your pets at home, except for medical care

Separate your pet from people and other pets in your home if he/she gets sick. The same way a person with COVID-19 would be isolated from others.

Always wash your hands with soap and water after cleaning up your pet. Protect yourself properly while nursing a sick pet.

Can dogs get Covid, and What could the symptoms be?

Pets sick with the virus that causes COVID-19 may show signs of:

  • Fever
  • Coughing
  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Lethargy (unusual laziness or sluggishness)
  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Eye discharge
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Mostly all animals carry germs that can make people sick, it is always advisable to practice healthy habits around pets and animals. Keep in mind that talking to the Vet always benefits you and your pets, take care.
