What are Read receipts?

These are small notifications that allow users to know when you’ve opened up the messaging app and looked at the message. On Apple devices, you have the ability to enable or disable read receipts on a case-by-case basis. They can be enabled or disabled to read receipts on your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch, along with the Mac. 

Note: Your preferences are linked to your Apple ID. If you enable read receipts on your iPhone, they will also be enabled on your iPad as well as the Mac.

How to turn off read receipts on iOS 15 or iPadOS 15?

  • Open the Settings app
  • Scroll down, then tap on Messages
  • Scroll down, then toggle the Send Read Receipts on or off
  • Tap on Done

How to turn on or off read receipts on macOS Monterey?

  • Open the Messages application
  • In Mac’s top menu bar, click on Messages
  • Click on Preferences
  • After the window appears, click on Messages
  • Here, Check or uncheck Send read receipts toward the bottom
  • Exit this Preferences window
  • Following either of the processes above will set the universal setting that applies to all contacts you send or receive messages from.
  • You also have the ability to enable or disable read receipts for individuals by following the steps provided below.

How to turn on or off read receipts for a particular contact on iOS 15/iPadOS 15?

  • Open the Messages app
  • Tap on the contact you want to change the read receipts setting
  • Tap on the picture/initial icon at the top
  • Toggle the Send Read Receipts on or off
  • Tap on Done

How to enable/disable receipts for a single contact on macOS Monterey?

  • Open the Messages app
  • Click on the contact want to change the read receipts setting
  • Click the Info icon in the top
  • Scroll down, then check or uncheck the Send Read Receipts
